Experiencing an emergency can be a nerve-wracking experience. Dental emergencies are no different. When faced with a dental emergency, you may feel panicked and want to rush straight to the emergency room. The truth, however, is that not all dental emergencies require hospital care. At Healthy Smiles Family Dentistry, we can provide treatment for a wide variety of different dental emergencies. There are also some dental emergencies that can be handled right in the comfort of your own home. If you are faced with a dental emergency, we can help you to determine what course of action you should take.

Emergency Dental Care at Home

While dental emergencies can be a scary thing, there are some emergencies that can be handled right in the comfort of your own home. One of these issues is a bitten lip, cheek, or tongue. These injuries are often painful, but they do not usually require any sort of professional care. If you are experiencing bleeding, you can place a piece of moistened gauze over the injured site and use gentle pressure to hold it there. The gauze will help to stop bleeding. The gauze can be replaced if necessary. If the injury causes pain or swelling, an over the counter pain reliever or an ice pack can help. If your bleeding does not stop after 15 minutes, then it is recommended that you seek emergency care.

Another issue that you may be able to treat at home is a toothache. While a toothache can be indicative of an infection, it can also point to something being lodged between your teeth. If you are experiencing tooth pain, gently but thoroughly brush and floss your teeth, and then rinse your mouth with a salt water solution. If your nothing comes out, your pain is not alleviated, or you suspect that you have a tooth infection, then you should call our office right away.

Emergency Care in Our Office

We can provide a wide variety of emergency dental services right here in our office. We can treat such things as:
•  Toothaches. If cleaning your teeth does not alleviate your pain, you may have a tooth infection. We can diagnose an infection and provide you with the appropriate treatment.
•  Tooth damage. Damage to your teeth can be caused by a variety of things such as facial trauma or biting down on something too hard. While minor damage does not affect your oral health and can be treated with a cosmetic fix, more significant damage can lead to an infection. Damaged teeth are often treated with crowns.
•  Displaced teeth. If your teeth have become partially dislodged, whether they have been knocked deeper into the sockets or knocked partially out, we can reset them and secure them with a splint.
•  Avulsed teeth. Adult teeth that have been completely knocked out can be set back into place. However, time is of the essence. Find the tooth and rinse it off, but do not touch the root end. Store the tooth in a jar of milk or salt water until your appointment. We can often replant the tooth and secure it with a splint while the supporting structures heal. If the tooth cannot be replanted, we can discuss your options for tooth replacement.

When it Is Time to Head to the Emergency Room

There are some dental emergencies that warrant an immediate trip to the emergency room. You should go straight to the emergency room if:
•  You experience excessive bleeding that does not stop after 15 minutes.
•  You are having difficulty breathing.
•  You suspect that your jaw is fractured.
